Final regatta in the 2008 CupIn the last weekend of September the fifth and final regatta of the 2008 Nordic A-Class Cup was sailed in Skælskør/Denmark. It was as part of the “Harboe Cup” where 15 different classes where competing. It’s always good fun to gather together with other sailors than the “usual suspects”, and it’s easy to promote the class – just power past them through their leeward side trapezing at double speed, and they will come to you at the beach afterwards to see what past them.Unfortunately there where only 7 A-Cat’s on the list, and only 5 of them showed up… Last year the battle for the top spot was decided between Pontus Johnsson (SWE) and Thomas Paasch (DEN) at the last race of the 2007 season. In 2008 it was no different. The 3 other participant where newcomers in the class, so the fight for victory turned out to be a match race. Saturday started out with 3 races in a light 6 knots breeze around noon followed by 2 races with wind up to 15 knots. At the end of the day, Thomas had a slim 1 point lead over Pontus. Over night the wind increased but in the morning it eased of a bit again, and races where sailed in approximately 16 knots. After a total of 8 races it was all back to a tie, and everything came down to the 9th and final race. Last year Pontus won the series by winning the last race of the last regatta, but this time Thomas got he’s revenge and took the overall victory in the Nordic A-Class Cup 2008. |
